Since the previous version of the "Intro to webBook Initiative" video was a webBook experience of the webBook for the the webBook Initiative, I added this video to vBooks as "A webBook Experience." This allows you to "experience" a webBook. This is the primary way to use webBooks effectively-- you experience them. Enjoy!
I updated the intro to webBook Initiative to focus on engagement and not on webBook mechanics to help people better understand how they might engage.
The primary target audience for this video are my colleagues at UC so they can quickly understand how they can engage. A secondary audience is anyone else who might like to engage.
The webBook Initiative webBook was updated 2/18/2025.
- Updated to new latest Legume release including using the new Legume template.
- General review and update highlighting working with UC.
An update on what's been going on...
Legume Product
Recall the Legume product is the creation tool for webBooks.
Improvements have been made with the aim of getting close to MVP (Minimal Viable Product).
- Added BackPointers -- Back pointers are on every page showing path back to main page. The BackPointers development project focused on creating the back pointers automatically. Prior to this is was a tedious and error prone task.
- Added Buildup -- A critical feature of webBooks is Buildup -- a page can be setup to show various features of the page in multiple views of the page. Typically this is done to walk sequentially through features of the page. Included is a left hand selection bar to get quickly to any stage of the buildup. The Buildup project focused on creating a buildup of a page based on layers. Prior this this project, buildup was difficult to the point of unusable. What is added makes this process straight forward and smooth.
- New Start Point Template -- In support of other development projects, particularly BackPointers, a new start point template was needed. An attempt was made to seamlessly support webBooks created with earlier templates. This proved difficult. As a result converting older webBooks to the new format is a "start-from-scratch and do a page-by-page copy old to new" process. While tedious, this process is straight forward and simple.
Migrating from AWS (Amazon Web Services) to Microsoft Azure for SaaS Support
- Supplying the Legume product as a Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) offering as well an installed product is critical for getting new users engaged. Implementation on AWS has served us well for several years, but there is little support available from AWS and we were encountering problems. There is no user community support for this work. The direction is to move to this to the Microsoft Azure -- the Microsoft product competing with AWS. This move is also motivated by UC being a "Microsoft Shop." This work is just beginning.
